AI in automation: where it actually helps

AI is now built into vision systems and robots. Here's where it makes a real difference on the production floor, and where classic automation still wins.

Two years ago, "AI" in a machine usually meant a research project. Today it ships inside the cameras and robots we integrate every week. Used in the right place, it removes the hardest part of many automation projects: teaching a machine to judge what a person judges by eye.

AI inspection

Traditional machine vision needs every defect described with rules: edge here, brightness there. AI vision systems, like KEYENCE's VS series, learn from examples instead. Show them a few dozen good and bad parts and they flag scratches, voids, contamination and cosmetic defects that rules struggle to describe. It's ideal for natural materials, textured surfaces and welds.

AI-guided robots

Collaborative robots, like those from Universal Robots, paired with vision can pick parts that arrive in random positions, so you don't need precise fixtures or trays. That makes small batches and frequent product changes practical to automate.

Robotic laser welding with inline inspection

A robot carrying a fiber laser welding head, with a camera to find the seam and a 3D laser profiler to measure the bead right after, closes the loop: every weld is made and checked in the same cell, with data saved to the part.

Where classic automation still wins

  • Measurement: calibrated laser profilers and gauging tools beat AI when the answer is a number in microns.
  • High-speed, repeatable motion: maglev movers, linear motors and precision stages don't need to "learn"; they need to be engineered.
  • Safety: interlocks and certified controls are deterministic by design.

The best machines use both: AI for judgement, engineering for precision. If you have a process that still needs a person to look at every part, send us samples and we'll tell you what's possible.
